Next Organic Gastro 2017: [Show Report]

One of my favourite Berlin-based trade shows is Next Organic. It’s a compact little food show which has been taking place annually since 2013 – check out my reviews of Next Organic 2014, Next Organic 2015 and Next Organic 2016. This year’s trade show, Next Organic Gastro 2017, took place on 21st September 2017 in Berlin’s Postbahnhof/Ostbahnhof.

The latest issue of Organic & Wellness News has just been published – you can download the pdf for free on the company’s website. This edition includes three of my articles:

  • Top 5 Organic Food Retailers in Germany (p.29-p.30) – the first installment of a new OWN article series which looks at the leading organic food retailers in various international markets.
  • Next Organic Start-Up Awards 2017 (p.30) – a round-up of the 2017 winners in this unique start-up competition.

Enjoy!

Next Organic 2016: [Show Report]

This is the fourth time I’ve attend organic trend show Next Organic (if you’re interested, here are my articles about Next Organic 2015 and Next Organic 2014). What I like about this compact little trade fair is that Next Organic is refreshingly non-dogmatic: a brand’s regional heritage and an ethical, sustainable production process is more important than organic certificates. This makes Next Organic is a great place to discover small manufacturers, artisan food labels and innovative food start-ups.

Each year, Next Organic organises a start-up competition and the winners get the opportunity to present themselves at the trade show. And in 2016, there were some fabulous brand concepts to discover: seaweed pasta made from algae harvested in Ireland, a company selling food products sourced from conflict countries and a food label which manufactures bone broth in convenient to-go packs.  On a side note: I also enjoyed seeing Paleo foods mingle so harmoniously with vegan brands!

Next Organic 2015: [Show Report]

Last Sunday, Next Organic 2015 took place in the terminal hall of Berlin’s now defunct Tempelhof airport. I’d been to last year’s trade show and loved it – read the 2014 blog article here – so I was very excited when 10th May finally rolled around! Although Next Organic is smaller than, for example, regional organic show BioOst it is also a great deal more exciting. Probably because Next Organic focuses strongly on culinary and food trends and has a much more local flavour.

Megatrend Neo Ecology: Social & community agriculture in and around Berlin

Eco-social agriculture was a major topic at the Next Organic 2014 trade show. As part of the Neo Ecology megatrend this type of community farming is booming at the moment. It is especially popular with city dwellers: you receive fresh organic food that is locally (i.e. sustainably) grown and you can also choose to get involved in the planting/harvesting process, reconnecting with nature etc., all without having to move to the countryside. In Berlin and Brandenburg (the county that surrounds Berlin) there are several interesting social farming enterprises. Continue reading

Next Organic 2014: [Show Report]

This Sunday I visited organic food fair Next Organic Berlin which took place in the buildings of old Tempelhof airport. Next Organic is very trend-driven show so if you want to see food/organic megatrends in action, this is the place to visit. The fair presented the latest in Raw Food, Vegan, and organic/sustainable food manufacturing as well as some very interesting regional and glocal (think global, act local:“glocal”) culinary concepts. Add to this a wide range of niche labels and small manufactories and a strong focus on local producers, and you have a very happening trade show indeed. Continue reading
