A few weeks ago Berlin’s latest shopping mall opened: the eagerly anticipated Bikini Berlin. It’s a very long building which stretches along Budapester Strasse, extending from Bahnhof Zoo to the Europa-Center. Bikini Berlin describes itself as “Berlin’s first Concept Mall” and it combines curated pop-up stores, brand boutiques and flagship stores on 17,000 sq m of retail space. Their pop-up store concept really is quite impressive. Continue reading

Store Profile: Vielfach Berlin – hand-made arts & crafts
I came across an interesting new Berlin store yesterday – Vielfach Kreativkaufhaus near Checkpoint Charlie. Owner Carsten Schirrmeister describes his concept as “off-line Dawanda” – for my international readers: Dawanda is the German equivalent of Etsy, an online marketplace for hand-made arts and crafts. Gold Gummy Bears Galore: Haribo’s new flagship store in Bonn, Germany
Confectionery manufacturer Haribo, makers of the famous Gold Gummy Bears, recently opened its very first flagship store – in the beautiful city of Bonn in the Rhineland area of Germany.
Haribo (the acronym stands for HAns RIegel BOnn, the initials of company founder Hans Riegel) was established in 1920 and its fruit gums and liquorice products are available pretty much all over the world. The company has subsidiaries in 22 countries and produces some 100 million gold bears per day (!).
And now they have finally opened a proper flagship store – long overdue, I think – right in Bonn’s city centre. As a major Haribo fan I was delighted to see the shop when I was home for Christmas last week. It retails Haribo’s entire German product portfolio as well as Haribo merchandise and limited editions products. Absolutely worth a visit!

Store Profile: Harry Lehmann perfumery – a Berlin legend
Harry Lehmann is a true Berlin institution. And my current Mintel Cityscape article. The company was founded in 1926 by the eponymous Berlin perfumer who came up with the following retail concept: sell high quality fragrances by weight, let customers bring their own bottles and combine all of this with affordable prices. Not surprisingly, this strategy proved to be popular with Berliners (and not just because of Berlin and Germany were already stuck in a major economic depression!). Continue reading

Store Profile: Planet Prestige
Planet Prestige is an online store for premium and niche beauty which was founded in December 2012. So far so good. But, and that is the unusual twist, unlike most online retailers the company has also opened a perfumery here in Berlin. Yes, a proper bricks-and-mortar store.
According to current EU legislation you can only sell cosmetics online if you also have at least one real store, so most online retailers have a street address somewhere to satisfy the requirements and that’s it. The Planet Prestige store on Oranienburger Straße 27, however, is a very stylish stand-alone store. It is also my current Mintel article topic. Continue reading

Store Profile: Saint Charles pharmacy in Berlin
Last week I visited a beautiful pharmacy in Berlin-Wilmersdorf – Saint Charles Apotheke (www.saintcharles.de), a partner store of the eponymous pharmacy in Vienna. They have a really unusual retail concept which is why I’m writing my December Cityscape article for Mintel on Saint Charles Berlin. Continue reading

Store Profile: Fingerbang pops up in Berlin
Today is the last day of The Fickle Finger of Fate, a temporary nail art event organised by Berlin label Fingerbang (www.fingerbang.com). Fingerbang is the creation of nail polish fan Larissa Bechtold, she decided to found her own label and organise pop-up nail art bars all across Berlin. What a fantastic idea! The nail bar is located in Bold Room on Torstrasse 68 in Mitte, check it out! Fingerbang is also my current retail trend article for Mintel and it was great fun to write…..! Here it is: Fingerbang
