Fragrances Bar, Berlin: [Profile] The Art of Cocktails & Perfumery

See the picture below? That’s the motto of the Fragrances Bar in Berlin’s Ritz-Carlton Hotel. And believe me, the cocktails in this bar are indeed works of art!

As you might have guessed, the drinks in the Fragrances Bar are inspired by perfumes. However, Arnd Henning Heissen – creator of Fragrances and bar chef of Ritz-Carlton’s Curtain Club – takes his innovative mixology/perfumery project one step further.

The Fragrances Bar does not offer a conventional paper-based list of beverages. Instead, the bar’s cocktail menu is olfactory, three-dimensional and fully interactive.

Mintel articles: Harry Lehmann and Manhattan Pop-Up Store

Here are two more articles I wrote for Mintel’s BPC website last year: colour cosmetics brand Manhattan’s first pop-up store in Berlin (publication date: July 2013) and a company profile of Berlin perfumery Harry Lehmann (publication date: August 2013). These articles are copyrighted!

Store Profile: Harry Lehmann perfumery – a Berlin legend

Harry Lehmann is a true Berlin institution. And my current Mintel Cityscape article. The company was founded in 1926 by the eponymous Berlin perfumer who came up with the following retail concept: sell high quality fragrances by weight, let customers bring their own bottles and combine all of this with affordable prices. Not surprisingly, this strategy proved to be popular with Berliners (and not just because of Berlin and Germany were already stuck in a major economic depression!). Continue reading

Store Profile: Planet Prestige

Planet Prestige is an online store for premium and niche beauty which was founded in December 2012. So far so good. But, and that is the unusual twist, unlike most online retailers the company has also opened a perfumery here in Berlin. Yes, a proper bricks-and-mortar store.

According to current EU legislation you can only sell cosmetics online if you also have at least one real store, so most online retailers have a street address somewhere to satisfy the requirements and that’s it. The Planet Prestige store on Oranienburger Straße 27, however, is a very stylish stand-alone store. It is also my current Mintel article topic. Continue reading

Niche Parfum & Showroom – Art and indie fragrances in Prenzlauer Berg

Earlier this week I visited Niche (store website), a brand new art-and-perfume store in Rykestraße 16. Artist Chris Gräfensteiner opened her fragrance/showroom in December; she sells her own artwork, fragrances from L’Artisan Parfumeur and Six Scents and Berlin accessories label Wanawake. A beautiful store and a really cool retail concept; Niche will also be my next Mintel article.

Store Profile: Saint Charles pharmacy in Berlin

Last week I visited a beautiful pharmacy in Berlin-Wilmersdorf – Saint Charles Apotheke (www.saintcharles.de), a partner store of the eponymous pharmacy in Vienna. They have a really unusual retail concept which is why I’m writing my December Cityscape article for Mintel on Saint Charles Berlin. Continue reading
