Exhibition: “Meret Oppenheim – Retrospektive” at Gropius-Bau

Tomorrow the Meret Oppenheim retrospective will officially open in the Gropius-Bau art museum near Potsdamer Platz. The museum had the official pre-opening press conference today and the participants were able to view the exhibition in advance. For those who don’t know who Meret Oppenheim was (I didn’t initially): she is – or rather was – one of the most important female Surrealist artists of the 20th Century!

Globe-M: “Tarantel 2”, photography at Künstlerhaus Bethanien – article

“Tarantel 2”, the new exhibition at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, brings together four international photographers – Elin Høyland from Norway, Vadim Gushchin and Lucia Ganieva from Russia and Thomas Sandberg from Germany. Four very different sujets but equally fascinating; highly recommended. The exhibition is running until 4th August 2013 and entry is free. Check out www.bethanien.de/en/exhibitions/tarantel-2. And here is the globe-M article: Der Biss der Spinne.

Globe-M: “Bourgeoisie, Swing and Molotov Cocktails” exhibition at C/O Berlin – article

A new C/O Berlin exhibition which is starting tomorrow – Globe-M article: Amerika in Berlin. The background: C/O Berlin is one of the most high-profile photography exhibition galleries in Berlin. They’re a non-profit foundation and were established in 2000; for many photography fans they have an almost iconic status. For the last 13 years C/O Berlin was based in the old Postfuhramt on Oranienburger Straße in Mitte, a truly spectacular historical building. However, this March the gallery had to leave its Mitte location; they moved to Charlottenburg instead, into the Amerika Haus on Hardenbergstraße just behind Bahnhof Zoo train station. Store Profile: Planet Prestige

Planet Prestige is an online store for premium and niche beauty which was founded in December 2012. So far so good. But, and that is the unusual twist, unlike most online retailers the company has also opened a perfumery here in Berlin. Yes, a proper bricks-and-mortar store.

According to current EU legislation you can only sell cosmetics online if you also have at least one real store, so most online retailers have a street address somewhere to satisfy the requirements and that’s it. The Planet Prestige store on Oranienburger Straße 27, however, is a very stylish stand-alone store. It is also my current Mintel article topic. Continue reading

Globe-M: “Gulag: Traces and Testimonies 1929-1956” at Deutsches Historisches Museum – article

On 17th June a new exhibition opens at Deutsches Historisches Museum (DHM): “Gulag: Spuren und Zeugnisse 1929-1956”. As the name indicates the exhibit deals with the Soviet labour/prisoner camp system Gulag. This is where political prisoners, class enemies and dissidents were interned. And then died.

There were Gulag camps all over the Soviet Union. Several other Communist-administrated Eastern Bloc states had a similar labour camp system. Different name, same principle. The exhibition is very worthwhile. Be warned though, seeing some of the exhibits is heart-wrenching and you’ll leave with a deep hatred of Stalinism and Communism, at least I did. Here’s the article (as always, German only!): „Sozial schädliche Elemente“.

The exhibit will run until 1st September 2013, at the German Historical Museum (DHM), Unter den Linden, Berlin.

Globe-M: Imran Qureshi At Deutsche Bank KunstHalle – article

Deutsche Bank KunstHalle on Unter den Linden is currently showing the first big European exhibition of Pakistani artist Imran Qureshi (globe-M article: Blumen und Blutspritzer). Qureshi is Deutsche Bank’s Artist of the Year 2013; he studied miniature painting at the Lahore National College of Arts and combines this very traditional art technique with modern sujets and influences. Global Art of Perfumery 2013: [Show Report]

Last weekend the Global Art of Perfumery trade show took place in Berlin. The organisers moved it here from Düsseldorf in a bid to re-establish the show concept and, from rumours I’ve heard at other trade shows, help boost visitor numbers which had fallen off in recent years….!

But I’m not here to judge! I’m here to visit the show which is what I did. More on Global Art of Perfumery 2013 after the jump (as one of my favourite Berlin blogs – IheartBerlin – always says….!) Continue reading

Globe-M: “Phnom Penh: Rescue Archaeology” exhibition at ifa gallery in Berlin – article

The ifa gallery in Linienstraße is still showing its exhibition “Phnom Penh: Rescue Archaeology” (German title: “Phnom Penh: Das Verschwinden verhindern”) – contemporary Cambodian art.

The exhibition is excellent, go and see it, entry is free. Here is the link to the globe-M article I posted today: Der verschwundene See oder die Kontinuität des Wandels. It is even longer than my usual globe-M output but the whole topic was so interesting that I really couldn’t help myself.

Check out these links as well: Stiev Selapak, a Cambodian arts collective and Meta House Phnom Penh, a German-Cambodian cultural centre founded by Niko Mesterharm. I wish I’d known about Meta House and Stiev Selapak last year when I was in Phnom Penh….!!

And if you’re visiting the ifa gallery, stop for a coffee at Atelier Cacao next door – one of my favourite Berlin chocolate manufacturers (they do a milk chocolate with liquorice which is simply divine!). They also have a gorgeous café with outdoor seating, home made ice cream and chocolate confectionery and, if you have children with you, a very nicely furnished play area. Highly recommended.

Events: International Digital Forum Berlin / Copyright in the Digital Age

Two interesting events I’ll be attending in June: the International Digital Forum – a conference on digital global marketing/marketing trends – on 11th June 2013 in Adagio on Potsdamer Platz. And just one day later there’s a panel discussion about copyright in the digital age organised by BücherFrauen e.V., a professional network for women working in publishing. “Urheberrecht im digitalen Zeitalter” takes place on 12th June 2013 in the Grüner Salon in Volksbühne theater and starts at 7pm.
