Travels in Zürich (2/2): Urban development and creative projects
Urban development and city planning is a fascinating topic, in particular the temporary use of industrial wasteland and empty urban spaces. Berlin is a good place to be if you like this sort of thing – there are plenty of creatives/communities/artists/galleries based in abandoned houses, old factories or other unusual places. And Berlin still has a surprising number of urban spaces left although over the last years, many areas have been redeveloped or are currently under construction.
In Zürich the case is quite similar. Although this is a city of tremendously high property prices, especially in the city centre, there are little pockets of creative communities that use whatever urban spaces are currently unoccupied. Like Basislager, an art collective based in containers, or the non-commercial communal area of Stadionbrache Hardturm, both of which are located in the Zürich suburb of Altstetten. Continue reading

Mintel article: Planet Prestige
Here is my Cityscape article on online perfumery Planet Prestige: Planet Prestige covers all the bases. As always: this article is copyrighted so please don’t post it elsewhere! [EDIT: Planet Prestige’s Berlin store has closed down!]
Documentary: “The Human Scale” – urban city planning
This afternoon I watched a screening of The Human Scale, a Danish documentary on city planning. Fascinating topic: Half of the human population lives in cities or urban agglomerations. By 2050 this number will reach 80%. Europe has it comparatively easy: over here cities and towns tend to be low-rise and quite accessible. And even cities like London or Paris are compact and well-administrated when compared to the sprawling, congested, traffic-clogged mega cities of Asia and the Indian Sub-Continent – or South/Latin America, for that matter; I would imagine problems in Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo are much the same. Natural Cosmetics Conference 2013: [Show Report] Authenticity, consumer insights and LOR
The Natural Cosmetics Conference took place this Tuesday and Wednesday here in Berlin. It’s the third year that I’ve attended the event and, as always, it was very worthwhile. Interesting people, good keynote speakers and well-chosen discussion topics, not to mention a very nice venue!
This year the Branchenkongress had a strong sociodemographic focus; the first day especially revolved around demographics and market research, trends and consumer behaviour – exactly my areas of interest so I took lots of notes. Here’s a brief review (find out all about LOR!): Continue reading

New project – ModelPeople’s GlobalCultureBlog
ModelPeople is a market/trend research company with a special focus on global consumer trends/consumer behaviour. Check out their GlobalCultureBlog (love the concept!!) – they have trend researchers/contributors in the cities you see listed on the website. These contributors regularly write about trends that appear in their local market/culture. And I’m the new Berlin city correspondent. Yay! Here is the link to my first Berlin article: Handmade/Remade: Individualization in Berlin.

Store Profile: Planet Prestige
Planet Prestige is an online store for premium and niche beauty which was founded in December 2012. So far so good. But, and that is the unusual twist, unlike most online retailers the company has also opened a perfumery here in Berlin. Yes, a proper bricks-and-mortar store.
According to current EU legislation you can only sell cosmetics online if you also have at least one real store, so most online retailers have a street address somewhere to satisfy the requirements and that’s it. The Planet Prestige store on Oranienburger Straße 27, however, is a very stylish stand-alone store. It is also my current Mintel article topic. Continue reading
