This afternoon I watched a screening of The Human Scale, a Danish documentary on city planning. Fascinating topic: Half of the human population lives in cities or urban agglomerations. By 2050 this number will reach 80%. Europe has it comparatively easy: over here cities and towns tend to be low-rise and quite accessible. And even cities like London or Paris are compact and well-administrated when compared to the sprawling, congested, traffic-clogged mega cities of Asia and the Indian Sub-Continent – or South/Latin America, for that matter; I would imagine problems in Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo are much the same. Natural Cosmetics Conference 2013: [Show Report] Authenticity, consumer insights and LOR
The Natural Cosmetics Conference took place this Tuesday and Wednesday here in Berlin. It’s the third year that I’ve attended the event and, as always, it was very worthwhile. Interesting people, good keynote speakers and well-chosen discussion topics, not to mention a very nice venue!
This year the Branchenkongress had a strong sociodemographic focus; the first day especially revolved around demographics and market research, trends and consumer behaviour – exactly my areas of interest so I took lots of notes. Here’s a brief review (find out all about LOR!): Continue reading

Brand Profile: Kryolan
Kryolan is a professional makeup artist brand from Berlin. It was established in 1945; Kryolan’s core business is film and theater makeup, they make artificial blood, body fluids and scars, camouflage and HD products; they are also very popular with makeup artists. And they have a great range of “regular” makeup. I love their Camouflage Powder; have been buying it for years. Read my Mintel article here.

Exhibition: “Spatial Structures” at The Wye, Kreuzberg
This Friday evening a new exhibition opens at The Wye on Skalitzer Strasse (Kreuzberg): “Spatial Structures” features works by artist Jenny Keuter – check out the exhibition website, it looks great; I think I might write an article for globe-M on this. Globe-M: “The Unanswered Question. İskele 2” at Tanas gallery – article
“The Unanswered Question. İskele 2” is a cooperation between Tanas and the Neue Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) and presents international artists, musicians and performers from Turkey and the surrounding geopolitical areas. It is also Tanas’ very last exhibition since the arts space is going to close its doors this year. Sniff.
The exhibition is accompanied by a series of performances and other events that will take place at Tanas, HAU (Hebbel am Ufer) theatre and n.b.k. More information here: www.tanasberlin.de/index.php?lang=en&nav=vorschau. The exhibition opens on 8th September 2013 and the vernissage is on Saturday, 7th: from 5-7pm at Tanas and from 7pm onwards there’ll be a concert and party at n.b.k. Yay!
And here is my globe-M article: Ankunft und Abschied.

Store Profile: Harry Lehmann perfumery – a Berlin legend
Harry Lehmann is a true Berlin institution. And my current Mintel Cityscape article. The company was founded in 1926 by the eponymous Berlin perfumer who came up with the following retail concept: sell high quality fragrances by weight, let customers bring their own bottles and combine all of this with affordable prices. Not surprisingly, this strategy proved to be popular with Berliners (and not just because of Berlin and Germany were already stuck in a major economic depression!). Continue reading
