Have you ever come across Ingli Pai, Green Nature, Moshi, Jovely, Sohvy, PanicaOrganica, Luminordic, Vestige Verdant or Ontic Minerals? They are all organic beauty brands from the Northern European country of Estonia. These labels have a very selective distribution even in their own country. And none, at the time of writing, are available outside of Estonia. Unless you count online stores. Talk about niche retail! Continue reading

Vivaness 2014: [Show Report]
Today is the last day of Vivaness, the biggest European trade show for organic cosmetics. I was in Nuremberg this week to attend the show and had a good time – interesting people, good conversations and some great new niche brands. Vivaness is always inspiring.
Amongst the big German exhibitors were Logocos with Logona, Sante and Heliotrop, Dr. Hauschka and Kneipp, Lavera, Santaverde and Primavera as well as smaller German labels like Benecos, Nonique, Demeter-certified Martina Gebhardt, Speick and Luvos. There were also some interesting international companies – my favourites here include Natura Siberica from Russia and Mádara from Latvia, both of which attended the show last year.
However much I love the products of some of these companies, the best thing about trade shows is the chance to discover new and exciting international brands. Here are some of the companies that I particularly liked – most of them were first-time exhibitors at Vivaness and almost all of them are not (yet) available in Germany. Continue reading

Natural Cosmetics Conference 2013: [Show Report] Authenticity, consumer insights and LOR
The Natural Cosmetics Conference took place this Tuesday and Wednesday here in Berlin. It’s the third year that I’ve attended the event and, as always, it was very worthwhile. Interesting people, good keynote speakers and well-chosen discussion topics, not to mention a very nice venue!
This year the Branchenkongress had a strong sociodemographic focus; the first day especially revolved around demographics and market research, trends and consumer behaviour – exactly my areas of interest so I took lots of notes. Here’s a brief review (find out all about LOR!): Continue reading

ECM market report: Colour Cosmetics
Obviously I can’t post the entire market report. However, here are a couple of the main trends and market drivers that have characterised the German colour cosmetics segments in 2012/2013:
1) limited editions! This is a unique aspect of the German colour cosmetics market. We have four drug store brands here – Palmer’s P2, Coty’s Manhattan and Cosnova’s Catrice and Essence – that have the same target group (the teen and twen market) and a similar entry-level pricing. These three companies are fierce competitors and they battle it out with a product launch pace that has to be seen to be believed. Continue reading

Trade show: Global Art of Perfumery 2013
Global Art of Perfumery is coming to Berlin (yay!) – it’s a trade show for premium perfumes and cosmetics which used to take place in Düsseldorf. I visited Global Art in 2010 when I was in town for Beauty International – they had a rather impressive line-up of premium fragrance manufacturers and distributors. Continue reading

Advent’s buying up German retail group Douglas
…although I’m not a fan of Douglas perfumeries (this is a purely personal opinion!) it is depressing that yet another German retail group is being acquired by a US investor…..sad! I’m writing a short piece on this for Cosmetics International….
