Next Organic 2015: [Show Report]

Last Sunday, Next Organic 2015 took place in the terminal hall of Berlin’s now defunct Tempelhof airport. I’d been to last year’s trade show and loved it – read the 2014 blog article here – so I was very excited when 10th May finally rolled around! Although Next Organic is smaller than, for example, regional organic show BioOst it is also a great deal more exciting. Probably because Next Organic focuses strongly on culinary and food trends and has a much more local flavour.

Mintel articles: Original Unverpackt, Mühle flagship and Weleda’s Bikini pop-up

Here are three of my Berlin Cityscape articles from last winter – the opening of Original Unverpackt, Berlin’s first supermarket to sell groceries without packaging (read the article here), the new Berlin flagship of German premium shaving brand Mühle (the article is available here) and organic beauty brand Weleda’s recent pop-up store in the Bikini concept mall (for the article, click here). Enjoy but, as always, please respect the copyright!

Store Profile: Original Unverpackt in Kreuzberg, Berlin

Last autumn an unusual store opened here in Berlin: Original Unverpackt (lit. “originally unpackaged”) is the city’s first supermarket to sell groceries without packaging and in bulk. OU’s founders Milena Glimbovski and Sara Wolf raised the money for their project via crowdfunding which ensured a lively debate in the German media about packaging waste, recycling and food wastage, long before the store even opened.

Mintel article: Berlin perfumery Frau Tonis Parfum

This summer I wrote a profile about Frau Tonis Parfum – one of my favourite perfumeries in Berlin: a beautiful store, great fragrances and they even have a brand cooperation with one of my favourite Berlin bars! Check out the Mintel article here.

Mintel article: Glööckler flagship Berlin

I arrived back in Berlin three days ago. It was a marvellous five weeks away and I’m still trying to sort out all of my impressions. My next trip to that region is already booked, by the way: two weeks in Tokyo in late February/early March plus a few days in Seoul/Korea. I’ve never been to Korea and already have a long list of stores and places I want to visit.

Before taking off for Japan, however, I’ll be visiting Vivaness trade show in Nuremberg. And after my return I’ll be attending Beauty International trade show in Düsseldorf. It looks like 2015 will be full of travelling and trade shows (yay!)

Since I won’t have time to update the blog this week (too much work to do), here is an article I wrote on German designer Harald Glööckler’s new Berlin flagship store this summer. Glööckler is a rather interesting phenomenon, he has a very flamboyant, in-your-face personality and he polarises public opinion. However, when I researched the article, I was surprised by how genuine he appears, despite his obvious and carefully cultivated artificiality. Enjoy the article!

Natural Cosmetics Conference 2014: [Show Report] Day One

Last week the annual Naturkosmetik Branchenkongress (Natural Cosmetics Conference) took place in Berlin: two days of stimulating presentations, interesting people and so many new ideas, inspirations and things to research that my head is still spinning.

This year the conference was all about trends and changes: how the organic beauty market is changing and how it might look in five or ten years. Topics included customer journeys, the way that consumers are changing the retail market (social media, peer reviews, shit-storms…) and how they are starting to influence what brands are doing, the role of e-commerce and how this is changing C&T distribution and how authenticity and transparency are amongst the most important factors in successful brand management.

I will be splitting this article into two separate posts – Day One and Day Two – which should improve the readability. It is still a long text though. You have been warned! Continue reading

Berlin Art Week 2014: Positions

It is Berlin Art Week again! From 16th September to 21th September the city is dominated by, well, art. There are exhibitions, performance, screenings, gallery walks and conferences at different venues in Berin – and this weekend, in Kaufhaus Jandorf in Berlin’s Mitte district, was the Positions Berlin art fair. Little Wood: A temporary garden in Berlin

I came across Little Wood through one of the blogs I follow, Berlin Tidbits, and was quite bowled over by this cool project. Little Wood is a temporary urban garden on Invalidenstrasse/Ackerstrasse in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg district. The makers of Little Wood, Contemporary Food Lab, describe their project as a “urban eco-system, a holistic experiment to discover and explore the sensuality of urban ecology”. Continue reading
